The Essence of the White Witch
The White Witch moves through the world with an almost ethereal grace. Rooted in harmony and love, the White Witch works to nurture growth and balance within themselves and others. Often seen as a lightworker, protector, or healer, the White Witch dabbles exclusively in positive energies, honing gentle power to serve, not to manipulate or control.
Tools of the Trade
Honored among the archetypes, the White Witch works closely with the elements of earth, water, air, and fire. The White Witch also works with spirit, paying homage to the interconnectedness of all things. Working with spirit in the ways of the White Witch may include practicing meditation, breathwork, or visualization rituals that “lift the veil” between the physical and the unseen.
Devoted to the healing arts, both energetic and sympathetic, the white witch calls on frequency to move through themselves and into those they assist. This allows the ancient currents that carry wisdom to flow through them, enlivening the medicines, exercises, and comfort they provide to others. This is the fulfillment in service.
Those who align with this archetype usually engross themselves in the knowledge of energy manipulation techniques. Reiki is a gift that can be common for this archetype, but not a given. Yet, they heal people, animals, and the earth. The talents of this archetype are not limited to humans and animals alone. Some of this subculture devote their craft to restoring the planet in the areas where they live. Their spells, rituals, altars, and affirmations are designed around bringing back a healthier and more fertile land. The white witch uses their body as their primary tool and conductor for their magic.
The White Witch’s Apothecary
Their strength of will and commitment to their calling and path make them invaluable to the communities and families they serve and assist. Besides energy, frequency, their faith, and their bodies, white witches/healers use sacred oils and resins to help them facilitate their work. These include
Oil of frankincense
Oil of rosemary
Rose oil
Sandalwood oil
The herbs that are most commonly paired with these sacred oils in various combinations are:
Lavender for calm
Rosemary for protection
Chamomile for peace
Sage, as well as sage alternatives for cleansing
Sage alternatives:
Cedar twigs
Dragons blood
Frankincense resin
Sweet grass
Syncing with The Moon
White witches are also known to work closely with the moon’s phases, serving as mirrors of their own inner cycles. The New Moon symbolizes beginnings, a time for setting intentions and planting seeds. The Full Moon represents illumination, where emotions cannot hide; during this phase the white witch taps in to understand. The Dark Moon allots space for quiet reflection and deep healing before the cycle renews.
The Dark Night of the Soul is a sacred ritual in white witchcraft, honoring the phases above and within. It is a practice of confronting the shadow self, transmuting pain into understanding, and emerging with a softened heart and clearer spirit.
To perform The Dark Night of the Soul Ritual, you will need:
A black candle (for shadow work and protection)
A journal and pen
A small bowl of salt water (for purification)
Obsidian or black tourmaline (for grounding)
A soft cloth or blanket
Find a quiet, dark space where you won’t be disturbed. Sit comfortably and light the black candle.
Hold the obsidian or black tourmaline in your hand, breathing deeply to ground your energy.
Begin journaling, allowing your thoughts to flow uncensored. Write about the shadows you’re ready to face—the fears, the doubts, the hurts. Let it spill onto the page with honesty and grace.
When you feel ready, dip your fingers in the salt water and gently touch your forehead, heart, and palms, affirming: “I honor the darkness within me, for it is part of my light. I release what no longer serves.”
Wrap yourself in the soft cloth or blanket, symbolizing rebirth and comfort. Sit quietly, allowing the candle to burn as you reflect.
Before closing the ritual, take a moment to feel the shift in energy and express gratitude for the wisdom received through this practice, then:
Release & Ground
If you used obsidian or black tourmaline, hold it in your hands and visualize it absorbing any lingering heaviness.
Place the stone on the ground or your altar as a symbolic gesture of release.
Dip your fingers into the salt water once more, gently touching your forehead, heart, and palms as you say:
“I release what no longer serves. I am grounded. I am whole.”
Snuff the Candle
In witchcraft, snuffing out a candle (rather than blowing it out) is seen as sealing the energy rather than scattering it. Use a candle snuffer or place a fire-safe lid over it. As you do, whisper: “The work is done; the light remains.”
Journaling Reflection
Spend a few moments writing down any lingering thoughts, emotions, or insights that came up during the ritual.
This solidifies the work done and allows you to track your growth over time.
Clear Your Space
Open a window or light a bit of incense to cleanse the space of any residual energy.
Gently fold your ritual cloth or blanket, honoring its purpose in your healing.
Ground Yourself
Finish with a grounding exercise: drink a glass of water, eat something nourishing, or walk barefoot on the earth if you can.
Ritual Practices with Sound and Written Word
The healer or white witch archetype also utilizes sound in healing rituals that help the patient or individual go deep within themselves to reach a mental state where they can confront trauma or other intense experiences and begin the healing process from within while relaxed and receptive to new perspectives and able to see things with a truthful eye.
White witchcraft, at its core, is about following the heart’s call to heal, nurture, and serve from a place of love. The White witch works with many mediums, including words. The deep traversing into one's own spirit unlocks a resonance between people that transcends space and time. This very call is what inspires projects like Elemental Substack and Hippiness Is.
Sometimes, that call meets the White Witch early on in life, inspiring them to attune to the energies and learn from the dualities of humankind. Such was the case when
created Soft Girl Era: Mindmaps to the Heart. A seed that took root during childhood was nourished by the spirit of the white witch within - and when that seed was ready, the message was clear: Help them get here, too.Soft Girl Era (written, designed, and self-published by Hippiness Is) is a living grimoire dedicated to your healing and self-discovery journey. Inspired by what she needed and didn’t have, Emily’s digital journal offers the space to connect with the sacred softness that lives in us all and serves as a guide in learning the language of intuition.
Soft Girl Era is exclusively available on Emily’s website, hippinessis.com
